We look at the development of the BRICS, a grouping of five significant developing economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Ever since its founding in 2009, BRICS has played a significant role in world politics. You may not be aware, though, that in 2023, the BRICS group increased its membership to include six more nations. The United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Arabia are among them. Under the sweeping tide of the 4th Industrial Revolution, this decision makes history by showing the BRICS’ unwavering commitment to fostering equitable progress.
Every new member adds a unique viewpoint, economic potential, and geopolitical importance to the group. While Egypt, the most populous country in Africa, exerts significant influence in the Arab world, Iran and Saudi Arabia emerge as significant regional powers in the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates, a center of innovation and commerce in the Gulf, and Argentina, a G20 member with one of Latin America’s most formidable economies, deepen the variety of the alliance. Ethiopia, a rising economic power and pioneer in African peacekeeping operations, strengthens the coalition’s position.
This growth is a tapestry made of both possibilities and obstacles. The growing variety might possibly make reaching a consensus more difficult, but it also gives BRICS the ability and authority to successfully address global concerns. In regards to trade, investments, finance, health, education, technology, energy, the environment, security, and counterterrorism, this alliance is still unwavering in its commitment.
while still on it me and my co-workers had a conversation the other day about the BRICS+ developments and one of the topics mentioned was the possibility of the UAE allowing a free visa pass to the BRICS countries as a way to facilitate free trade and radical economic improvements. This is an intriguing idea, but it also raises some questions.
For example, how would this affect the security and sovereignty of the UAE and the other BRICS+ members? How would this impact the existing visa policies and regulations of these countries? How would this affect the tourism and cultural exchange between these countries?
My view is on the discounted oil from the Arabs and the agricultural benefits from South Africa that the BRICS countries could reap from this expansion. This is indeed one of the possible advantages of this alliance, as it could enhance the energy security and food security of these countries.
However, this also depends on the level of cooperation and coordination among these countries, as well as their willingness to share their resources and expertise. Moreover, this also requires a careful balance between economic development and environmental sustainability, as both oil and agriculture have significant impacts on the climate and biodiversity of these regions.
